Building Research

The William T. Cannady Hall for Architecture advances the international stature of Rice Architecture as a preeminent institution of learning, research, and public engagement—both with the city of Houston and the world more broadly.

With a generous lead gift from Professor Emeritus William T. Cannady, the Rice School of Architecture is building the William T. Cannady Hall for Architecture, an extension to MD Anderson Hall. The school has always focused on design and design research, and this new, world-class space complements the school’s existing home. The 20,000-square-foot building includes spaces for collaborative teaching and researchfrom the two-story gallery space to the world-class fabrication lab, the building is both a hub of design production and public engagement.

Swiss architectural firm Karamuk Kuo designed the building. Established in 2010 by Ünal Karamuk and Jeannette Kuo and based in Zurich, Karamuk Kuo is an award-winning architecture firm that brings diverse building experience to the design process. Known for creatively working within constraints and with extensive backgrounds in architectural education and the design of academic buildings, Karamuk and Kuo are designers especially well situated to consider the spatial and logistical needs of our school.
