The Rice University School of Architecture congratulates alumnus Liang Wang, M.Arch. ’15, on his recent appointment as an assistant professor at the University of Texas at Austin School of Architecture.
Wang is both an architect and educator. He is also the cofounder of Commons Office, a research-minded design practice based in Austin and New York. Before founding Commons Office, he practiced architecture and urban design internationally at Herzog & de Meuron, SOM, WW Architecture, and Atelier Liu Yuyang Architects. Previously, he also taught at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design and the Syracuse University School of Architecture.
Wang credits the unique curriculum at Rice Architecture as one of the reasons he has found success both in practice and in academia. When asked about his master’s degree experience at Rice, he said, “The constructive positioning between ‘theory’ and ‘practice’ has shaped my trajectory . . . in profound ways. The history and theory series for Option 1 and 2 programs laid out a foundational theoretical framework for me, which I am still referring back to and building new ideas upon constantly.” Wang’s words and his new appointment are a testament to the depth and lasting legacy of the pedagogy taught at Rice Architecture.
