This seminar introduces students to core concepts of landscape analysis and design. Drawing on landscape architecture, urban theory, and environmental history, the seminar will focus on understanding and instrumentalizing the spatial and material relationships that shape the environment. The semester will be broken into thematic parts each consisting of a reading discussion, a technical workshop, a site visit, and a drawing assignment. The goal of the course is for students to learn how to observe, analyze, and document the landscape around them and to understand key environmental dynamics, such as topography, hydrology, planting, soils, and land use/land management as a means of intervening in our contemporary environmental crises.
